All my old AudioRANTS.

My misadventure in podcasting.

Every so often someone asks me about the podcast I did back in 2005, which I had titled AudioRANTS.

The reason it comes up is ’cause the podcasts are still out there on the internet. Back then I had no server space to host ’em on, so I stuck them on Internet Archive. Then I got the podcast posted on iTunes. Since every other podcast listing service in the world regularly goes digging through iTunes and steals all their links from them, this put AudioRANTS on every other podcast listing service… and from time to time someone will find the podcast, listen to the episodes, and wonder if I’m making any more.

Nice to be appreciated, but my usual response is that I have no plans to start it up again. I won’t say I never will, but after doing this batch I got the podcasting bug out of my system and don’t feel the urge to start it up again.

I took down the AudioRANTS site years ago, but I figured it might be best to have one blog entry on this site that links to all of them. So here they are.

Listen at your own risk. I make no claims of audio brilliance, profundity, or entertainment value. It’s just something I did, once upon a time.

AR-1: The First Podcast.
[13 July 2005] Introducing me, with some thoughts on Christian postmodernism.
AR-2: The “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Show.
[20 July 2005] Reading too much into Nirvana’s lyrics, identifying too closely with your music, what emergent Christians should be, plus way too many “Smells Like Teen Spirit” covers.
AR-3. The Peeves Show.
[27 July 2005] A list of things that annoyed me about living on the campus of Bethany University.
AR-4: The Worship Show.
[3 August 2005] In which I discussed worship music, worship leaders, the higher standard they're all called to, the problems that come with undereducated worship leaders whose talent is confused with anointing, and I play some music.
AR-5: The Summertime Show.
[10 August 2005] It was hot, it was summer, thus the summertime show: Eddie Murphy's “Ice Cream Man” bit (heavily censored), and songs with a summertime theme. Why the air conditioner doesn’t run at home. Ways I beat the heat: the movie theater, the coffee shop, and the library. Too many references to fat guy gravy.
AR-6: The Disneyland Show.
[17 August 2005] I went to Disneyland, so I made a show about it. How Disneyland deals with obnoxious customers—and how it should deal with them. The Fast Pass, Disney and its Princesses (and the princess complexes they generate), the out-of-date Tomorrowland, the Anaheim hotels, and Disney’s California Adventure not being California enough.
AR-7: The Postmodern Show.
[24 August 2005] My short definition of postmodernism: A healthy skepticism of absolutes. The necessity of questioning authority, and the God-given mandate to do so. (So long as you don’t confuse it with a challenge of authority.) Questioning pastors, traditions, and theology, always in favor of an authentic relationship with an unlimited God.
AR-8: The Back to School Show.
[31 August 2005] Why I went back to school, our school president’s motivational speech on ten things you should do for academic success, plus my commentary; ten more things that would help, in no particular order; and my missing fridge.
AR-9: The Theodicy Show.
[7 September 2005] Hurricane Katrina and how a good, almighty God and evil can co-exist in the same universe—not that I come to any real conclusions about it. The only reason people discuss theodicy is because we want to know who to blame.
AR-10: The Popular Heresies Show.
[14 September 2005] Heresies are false beliefs about God; they may not send you to hell but they do get in the way of knowing God better. I discuss one or two of them, and their cause: reducing God to a formula and our relationship with him to a contract.
AR-11: The Music and Fun Show.
[22 September 2005] In which I decide to not be so much of a downer and get back to the music and fun. Music I listen to. Movies I watch. Ranting about piracy hurting “the little guy” in the motion picture industry. Me goofing off. And music.
AR-12: Confessions of a Pirate.
[28 September 2005] My naughty past where I pirated music and software. I don’t anymore; but now my “piracy” consists of getting different sorts of access to the stuff I actually own.
AR-13: Where Kent Jabbers About Books.
[5 October 2005] In which I talk about my reading habits, the books I read, the books I read but don’t want to and why, the Christian publishing biz, and why it’s important to read books critically, especially the bible.

So much of my old stupidity to listen to…
